Jose Almonte, better known by his stage name DJ Small, is a Dominican-American DJ and producer who made significant contributions to the music industry, particularly in the genres of hip-hop and house music.
DJ Small was born on February 27, 1970, in the Dominican Republic, and moved to New York with his family at the age of one. He began experimenting with DJing at the age of just 11 years old when he would sneak into his uncle’s room to practice on his equipment. He was inspired by his native country’s merengue music and his love for hip-hop. DJ Small became well-known for performing at house parties, where he honed his skills and gained a following. He eventually started to get contracted for private parties and would DJ at local clubs as a guest DJ.

During his time with the label, DJ Small worked on the mastering of the album “El Hombre Merengue” by Kinito Mendez, alongside Yuli Ruiz at the 440 Studios in New York City. Ruiz was impressed by DJ Small’s talent and invited him to travel to the Dominican Republic to work with him and start his career there. However, DJ Small faced the challenge of being engaged to his girlfriend and ultimately decided to decline the offer and stay in New York to pursue his career.
